U-14 Boys Win the YMS Columbus Cup

Over the Columbus Day weekend, the boys team from the Upper Makefield-Newtown Soccer Club won the U-14 Select Division of the tournament.

The first game on Friday night under the lights on the Macclesfield Park turf field resulted in a 3-1 victory over the YMS Union. Saturday’s game pitted the team against the West-Mont Dynamo, and the team prevailed 3-2, giving up a late goal to make the game closer than needed. Sunday morning the team faced the Montgomery Cannons, and despite being down 1-0 including a penalty shot saved, the boys pulled together in the second half and gutted out a 2-1 win.

Sunday afternoon’s game was for the championship, and the Langhorne Hydra had also come through undefeated, scoring 14 goals and giving up three. A tie would have resulted in second place for the UM boys due to the round robin format, and the team knew this…and scored just a few minutes into the game. Despite several more chances, the team took a 1-0 lead into the half. The second half had Langhorne pushing players forward to try and even the score, with the ball going to both ends of the field. Many scrambles were in front of each net, but the score remained the same. Final Score 1-0.

Coaches for the team include Alan Sheriff, Darlington "Majik" Agu, and Patrick O’Neill. Players include:

Upper Makefield-Newtown Soccer Club U-11 Girls Capture EPYSA State Challege Cup

The Upper Makefield Newtown Soccer Club’s U-11 girls team ("Rockets") won the 2010 Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association (EPYSA) State Challenge Cup (8 v 8) on Saturday, May 15.  The Rockets beat the Lady Cannons from the North Union United Soccer Club (Lewisburg, Union County) by a score of 1-0 at the championship game held in West Chester, PA.  The Rocket’s strong defense held the previously undefeated Lady Cannons scoreless, while the offense was able to work its way through the tough defense of the Lady Cannons to score midway through the second half.   The Rockets are the first girls team in UMNSC history to win the State Challenge Cup.

The EPYSA State Challenge competition began in March and pitted the Rockets against such teams as FC Lehigh (Lehigh County) and FC Revolution Lightning (Berks County) before the Rockets faced the Ukrainian National Red Rocks (Horsham, Montgomery County) in the semi-finals.  The Rockets defeated the Red Rocks by a score of 5-4 in the semi-finals.  That victory came after the game was tied at the end of regulation, and remained tied after a 20-minute overtime period.  The girls then moved into a high-pressure shootout competition where they again tied the Red Rocks.  In a second "sudden death" shootout, the girls prevailed and earned their spot in the Finals.

Congratulations to Coaches Beth Pagano and Duane Robinson, as well as to the hard-working and dedicated girls of the U-11 Rockets.

After posting a 10-0 record during the regular season, where the boys outscored their opponents 42-3, the Patriots went undefeated and won their division championship title at the Hempfield Classic Tournament in Lancaster, 11/21-22.   The weekend was filled with outstanding soccer, much excitement, tremendous determination, excellent teamwork, and lots of fun!

While the Patriots got on the scoreboard first in the championship game, they found themselves down 2-1 with only minutes to score.  The team never gave up and applied strong offensive pressure to tie the game as time expired.  The division title was decided in a shootout where the Patriots emerged victorious.

Congratulations to the entire team and the coaches on a fantastic season!

Girls U8 Team Wins the 2009 Roger Erb Select Tournament

Following two practices, the GU-8 Select Team came together for their first tournament.  Starting with a 1-0 victory over Macclesfield United, the team posted it's first shut out.  This exciting start was quickly followed by a 2-0 win over Plymouth Soccer Club.  Showing steady improvement with each game, the girls then faced Deep Run and posted a 5-0 victory.  With 3 shutout wins in 3 games, the Team were rewarded with First Place in the Tournament.

Remarkably energetic despite the rain and mud, the girls enthusiasm for the game and team spirit shone though both on and off the pitch.  Everyone played every position displaying the versatility necessary at this young age and everyone played an equal amount of time during the games.  This truly was a team effort as the goals were spread around many scorers spurred on by enthusiatic support from both players and parents on the sidelines.

Team Captures 1st Ever State Cup Title in UMNSC History!

In Spring 2009, the Upper Makefield Patriots (Red) U9 Boys claimed the 1st State Cup Championship in the history of Upper Makefield Newtown Soccer Club today with a thrilling 2 - 0 victory over perennial soccer power Lower Merion Soccer Club.  This win comes on the heels of the U9 Boys Indoor State Cup title in January.

The Patriots got off to a fast start as Dean Rubakh buried a diving header into the corner off a beautiful pass from Conner Fife.  It was simply a world class goal and it occurred in the game’s 1st minute and it set the tone for the day.  The Patriots added to their lead mid-way through the second half as Coner O’Donnell fed Matt McAlister with a beautiful pass and McAlister beat the Lower Merion keep with his left foot to send the Patriots into the half up 2 - 0.

The second half was more of the same as the Patriots continued to apply the pressure hitting the cross bar and post to go along with some magnificent saves by the Lower Merion keeper.  Andrew Lutshcaunig kept his cool in the nets for the Patriots adding another clean sheet to his record.  As the whistle sounded a huge celebration ensued on the field as the boys piled on top of each other celebrating their Championship.

This group of boys from Upper Makefield is unique and special.  Very rarely does a club of this size produce such quality.  Their skill, desire, heart, hustle, love of the game and most importantly love for each other is to be commended.  As they approach their third year of play, they take with them a record (including losing 2 of their 1st 3 games in 2007) of 61 wins, 3 losses, and 2 draws. They also have won 8 tournaments from Maryland to NJ, an Indoor State Cup and now an Outdoor State Cup.   Special thanks to these boys for representing our Club with pride and dignity.
